Raspberry 50's dress

The completed project:
 Without cardigan:
Back:

The inspiration:
(from Mod Cloth, no longer available)

This was a fun, quick project. I wore it for my piano recital.

I used my old friend, New Look 6824 for the princess-seamed bodice and sash. However,
  • I didn't cut the bodice middle on the fold, but rather cut two and added seam allowance. I thought the seam would make it more vintage-y.
  • I cut the necklines on my dress form.
  • I drafted the multiple circle skirt.
  • I used an old pattern from the stash for my skirt's lining
The best part of this project was that the fabric was 75% off at the Joann's liquidation sale!!!! I bought the whole bolt of Party Taffeta, as it was only $1.50 a yard.

 Another fun project :)

Elizabeth Swann--finished!

Inspired by:
Elizabeth Swann's Gold dress from Pirates of the Caribbean.

I actually finished this one awhile ago, but our camera was broken. Hence the delay.

The bodice is in the same off-white taffeta from Joann's as the contrast skirt. I layered it with coffee-dyed lace and "pearls".
The fabric was such a find!
The sleeves also feature a fun ruffle of the main fabric, cut away in front to reveal more coffee-dyed lace.

I love this dress-my fave costume to date!

p.s. In this shoot, our 18th century Miss Elizabeth Swann is reading Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe. So historically accurate ;)

J Crew vs Simplicity pattern

I went shopping this past weekend, and stopped by a J Crew store! Pretty exciting, since I have always loved the catalog, but haven't been to a store.

Anyways, there was this lilac dress that I loved with this interesting bodice-- v-neck, with unusual darts and a triangle in the middle. The dress was about $90, so I didn't buy it.... however, I realized Simplicity 2177 is really simular!

I wish I could get a pic of the J Crew dress for you to compare. However, it isn't on their site, just in their store. *sigh*

Well, have a fabulous Wednesday!

p.s. Have you been making anything fun lately?
